A Study of Health Status and the Need for Health Service Facilities of the Elderly

Abstract
This study was designed to measure the health status of the elderly, based on whether they lived with their living family or not, in order to assist the development project of intervention, and to provide the data base for the establishment of welfare for the elderly.
Data collection was carried out from March 18 to 30, 1995 on those older than 65 who live in Kwangju. 59 of the subjects lived alone or only with their spouse and 61 of them lived with living family. The data were collected through interviews and questionnaires. Statistical analysis included numbers, percentage, x2-test, and t-test using SAS. The results of the analysis are as follows.
1) There was a statistically significant difference in the amount of pocket money variable(p<0.01), one of the general characteristics among the subjects, between the elderly who lived with living family and those who did not. The subject class without living family had more pocket money than that of the class with living family.
2) In the comparative study of the health status of the subjects, there was a statistically significant difference in ADL(p<0.05) and IADL(p<0.00) dependent on whether they lived with living family or not. The subject class without living family showed a higher mean of ADL(17.4) and IADL(18.9) than that of the class with living family(ADL(16.4), IA DL(16.5)).
3) As far as the need for health service facilities is concerned, there was no statistically significant difference between those who live with or without living family. In the subject class without living family, 57.6 % responded as I Don¢¥t Know Any Facilities, 66.1 % as I Don¢¥t Feel the Necessity for Facilities, and 72.2 % as I Don¢¥t Feel the Necessity for Specific Facilities. In the subject class with living family, 49.2 % responded as I Don¢¥t Know Any Facilities, 54.1 % as I Don¢¥t Feel the Necessities of Facilities, and 63.9 % as I Don¢¥t Feel the Necessity for Specific Facilities. The results showed low needs of health service facilities.
In conclusion, health status of the elderly who live with living family should be highly considered in the development of significant for its nursing intervention. When a welfare system for the elderly is to be established, it is important for its policies to reflect the needs of health service facilities based on the health status of the elderly.
